For those of us who have lived in the Valley a long time, we have all heard a few negative things about the place we call home. Its ‘boring’ or there is ‘nothing to do’, ‘no where good to shop’ etc.. I can certainly say I have been guilty of saying so in my younger teens. With the creation of OVP and my new found business partners and contacts, I can now say whole heartedly that there is tons happening here and I feel so passionate about sharing all this great place has to offer! Each week I am going to highlight something awesome from the Valley. Whether it is food, a great experience, an event, an awesome place to shop or something to do with your friends or partner. I want to reach out to the community and over come our age old boredom excuses! Its time for us to take back the Valley’s reputation and make it what we want it to be!
So for starters…..
Downtown Pembroke has always been a somewhat difficult place to shop. Whether its the parking, the actual weather, or it seeming a bit cumbersome in general, I know I have avoided it for one reason or another. This is no longer an excuse! There is just so much offered in our downtown to ignore it any longer and these last few months of exploration have been proof. This week I want to share my first few truly delicious and authentic interactions I have had at Wilkies Bakery. I can honestly say that I never thought of a bread shop bakery as a place I would come to so frequently. With my first step inside and taking in that fresh bread smell, interacting with staff that are so passionate about their brand and being involved in the community I was hooked. I continue to go back again and again to have light lunch, a coffee (they support local coffee vendor engine-house), a cupcake treat, and soak in the great atmosphere. Its not unusual to see the shop owners from Chahna Fai, White Pine Yoga or The Pembroke Boxing Club in and around Wilkies supporting each other and fostering true friendships within the downtown core.
We tend to forget, or take for granted these friendly homegrown places. Its easy to sit in your car and take the drive-thru at Timmies for a generic, and all to frequently unpleasant interaction, but a stop at Wilkies can actually mean the difference in your day; not just a coffee and a muffin but an actual experience. A positive interaction, a great taste, and shopping local are all truly worth your time.
