Amanda Buhse | Co-Founder Coal And Canary
Amanda Buhse is the co-founder of Coal and Canary Candle Company. Before starting Coal and Canary, Amanda worked as a graphic designer and marketer for companies both large and small. Her passion for graphic design started when she was young. Her curiosity mixed with artistic skill led her to work for ad agencies, print houses, and national fashion retailers as lead Art Director. The experience she learned while working for these diverse mixes of company’s taught her valuable skills that she brings to the table in her role as Co-Founder and Art Director at Coal and Canary each day.

Amanda has dedicated the last 3 years to curating lively events that foster meaningful connection and grow the local economy. She believes that by growing community we rise up to further everyone’s individual growth.
Amanda has worked with hundreds of local entrepreneurs in some of Ottawa’s most interesting urban venues, helping them to grow their small businesses and to hopefully take it to the next level of business development. Our markets are cultivated with entrepreneurial makers in mind, driven by the belief that being a modern maker is a mindset not defined by gender, age or check marks on your CV. It is defined by modern design, fresh branding and a growth mindset.
In 2016 Amanda wanted to offer a unique experience for shopping local,
opening a series of popup shops that has now turned into a permanent space in downtown Ottawa. The store offers shoppers the opportunity to shop local outside of the market space and creates further opportunity for makers to grow. 2019 will see the space grow to offer a boutique style co-working space and styled office rentals that will offer
Amanda ‘s vision for GEM is simple: to gather like-minded career women and entrepreneurs together to discuss business, the challenges that face us all, to be inspired to keep pursuing growth, continue to dream big, driven by her passion for growing the local economy and connecting people in meaningful ways.
Shannon Maclaggan | Anupaya
Shan is the Co-Founder of Anupaya, outdoor-inspired apparel, and goods company with a strong environmental stewardship initiative. Through Anupaya’s One Pound Promise, they commit to taking care of wild spaces by removing a pound of waste for every product sold by hosting and funding community cleanups across Canada and around the world.
She also runs Anupaya Adventure, a thoughtful, off the beaten path travel company creating adventures for people who give a damn. Offering authentic, culturally diverse experiences, while giving back to the communities they visit and hosting cleanups along the way.
Committed to responsible business practices and social and environmental responsibility, this long-time entrepreneur and risk taker gets really excited about using business as a powerful tool for change in the world.
Stacey Michalopoulos | Sugar Society
Stacey started the business with herself and one other staff member and has grown to a team of 30 in under 2 years. She has 17 years experience in the industry working and managing high volume salons in Winnipeg and when faced with moving cross country for her husband’s career. She took the leap to open a business of her own, something she had always dreamed of doing.
Stacey oversees all aspects of Sugar Society business – from day-to-day operations, marketing, social media and also is about to launch Sugar Society’s own product line with the help of local business The Valley Gentlemen.
Stacey is passionate about giving back to her community and runs different events through the business raising money for Cancer Society, Autism Awareness & Acceptance and more!
Janalla Janzen | Janalla Photography
Janalla is the founder of Janalla Photography, working with businesses and individuals to create imagery and storytelling. What drew her to a photography business, she loves to soak in every bit of beauty around her and share it with you. As someone who believes people should never stop growing. Janalla loves learning about the people she meets, “I would say that I don’t just do what I do to simply get a picture, but to document parts of a person’s story.” She has worked in a few different photography industries and is so thankful to have found what makes her heart beat the hardest and that’s working with businesses to create content for their brand as well as documenting the dynamic love that people share with each other.
Jodie Primeau | Founder Primeau Law
Jodie Primeau is an ardent feminist, social justice advocate, and lawyer. Jodie’s passion for social justice and feminist advocacy began in 2007, with her work at the Elizabeth Fry Society. At the University of Ottawa School of law, she studied under Kim Pate, Blair Crew, and Elizabeth Sheehy, focusing on women’s interactions with the law, domestic violence and the law and sexual assault law. In her career, Jodie advocates for a nuanced and holistic approach to vulnerable women who become involved in the justice system. In 2014, she was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Elizabeth Fry Society. In 2015, she founded the first bail release program in Canada where law students enter into jails and assist marginalized women in custody with getting released pending their trial. Jodie is a member of the local Women in Business group, Chamber of Commerce, and sits on the Theatre Arts Production Company Board of Directors and the North Renfrew Long Term Care Board of Directors. This January 2019, Jodie founded her town’s first Female-Run law office, Primeau Law, and created the Future of Feminism Award and scholarship, designed to promote equality advocacy and change in young adults.
Taylor Decaire | Ottawa Valley Promotions
Taylor Decaire is the Owner + Founder of Ottawa Valley Promotions. An event planning and marketing company in the Ottawa Valley. Taylor completed her studies in Ottawa with a post-grad in Business Management where she worked for reputable companies such as Own The Podium and The Ottawa Senators as their Media Coordinator.
